I attended Cornerstone under its former name Grand Rapids Baptist Bible College. Even that long ago, all professors had at least an MBA and many held doctorates. Class sizes were small and discussion was the norm. We were academically challenged to be our best and taught to look at all sides of isses and defend our positions. Cornerstone used to have great professors, but recently they fired or forced all of them to leave. They don't care about the arts at all and completely deleted pretty much the entire humanities department. Their beliefs are questionable at best, they don't practice what they preach and frequently have questionable speakers at the FORCED chapels. The president is referred to as a dictator by the student body but his friends run the board so he'll be there until Cornerstone is burnt to the ground.... Read More I miss when this university actually cared and tried, I miss my professors who were fired without notice over summer break, I miss not having to worry about every decision the school forces on the students. We used to mock Calvin but at this point its 100% better.

The few instructors that had a positive impact on my collegiate experience have all either left or been fired at this point. Cornerstone University provided a microcosm of toxicity that allowed me to deeply analyze many of my deeply rooted problematic beliefs. In the end, the friends I made at CU and myself have found success in our careers and lives in spite of cornerstone, not because of it.

Cornerstone has good professors and some good course programs but everything else about this university is not worth it, especially if you are a commuter. The events I went to on campus, including sporting events, were not well attended, showing the lack of school spirit. At the start of the semester, the chapel services are full with students getting their chapel credit, once most people have the required amount, the service attendance significantly decreases. You would think at a Christian university... Read More the students would love the opportunity to worship God, but most do not go beyond the requirement. As a commuter, things are rough. Even scholarships you cannot receive if you do not live on campus which is annoying. Just because commuters do not have the added amount of room and board does not mean that they need less financial help. Starting the semester, commuters were promised commuter lunches and events. There was only 2 that were announced and they were at an inconvenient time when many people had class. In the survey, I was able to give feedback but so far nothing has changed. There is a clear distinction between athletes and non-athletes, and these 2 groups do not mix together. Speaking of mixing together, there is little to no diversity. This is shown in the classroom and in the dining hall. The food (specifically meat) is terrible and majority of the time lacks flavor. You would think that for the price they charge for tuition, room and board, they would be able to afford some better dining. Almost every meal I eat is dry and I can't finish it. In class, I am the only student of color in many of my classes. The majority of the little diversity at cornerstone comes from the international students and there is a clear separation between the white students and international students or students of another race. Overall if you are used to a small, sheltered, not diverse, Christian, upper middle class circle, this is a good school for you, otherwise don't waste your time, not worth giving them your money.

The teachers seem more interested in evangelizing than they do making sure that you're ready for your future career. The program would be wonderful for someone who wanted to be a missionary I would assume, but for the majority of people who come to this program wanting to be teachers this isn't the best program for you. Some of the teachers are also extremely critical and don't offer any kind of help other than telling you to look at what your classmates are doing. The class sizes are small, but students are easily overlooked unless they post in the "prayer and praise" forums that every single class has. Some professors make it mandatory to work in partners and groups. There was an incident in one of my classes where a student dropped the class and the other student they were partnered with was left to fail and was told to figure out what to do on their own. Yes, you might learn some things in this program but that's at the risk of having to deal with Christianity in places that it doesn't need to be. I am by no means against religion, I come from a very religious family, but I feel that it's much more important to teach your students the things they need to know in a way that would be "public school safe" since most students are or will be public school teachers. Making students talk about what they think about religion and making students use Bible verses in their writing isn't helping anyone learn what they need to learn

The masters program at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary (part of Cornerstone University) has a small community feeling. There are small class sizes and professors who take a personal interest in their students. The classes are challenging but also individualized to the students' interests. They have a special... Read More urban cohort program. One con is that there is only one campus (there used to be more options.) The lobby area is very cozy for students to socialize and do homework. There is also a quiet study area upstairs. There are computers for students, free printer access and free copy access. The student senate also puts on multiple social events, including dessert nights at professors' houses and pizza dinners before night classes. The support staff are very friendly and helpful. I am thankful for the opportunity to study at a hospitable school.
