How We Rank "Best" Schools

%%YEAR%% Best 91³ÉÈË %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The 91³ÉÈË research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online bachelor's in holistic medicine degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few bachelor's in holistic medicine qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

We also manually research all tuition rates and include median earnings for holistic medicine majors five years after graduation when that data is available. By presenting the most complete data available, we aim to give you an honest, well-rounded picture of each program.

Expert Advice On Trusting Intuition While Pursuing Evidence in Holistic Medicine

Headshot of Sienna Benton

Holistic Wellness & Alternative Medicine Specialist, CNU College of Medicine

Sienna Eve Benton is a holistic wellness and alternative medicine specialist at California Northstate University’s College of Medicine. With a background that bridges art, science, and healing, she has explored innovative practices such as sound therapy while collaborating with researchers to advance evidence-based approaches in alternative medicine.

"Some specialties in holistic medicine require in-person experience for patients to receive the full benefit of treatment. Practices such as massage, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and even sound bath therapy depend on physical interaction to deliver the full healing effects. While foundational training should take place in person, online learning can offer valuable insights to new techniques. Practitioners who already have hands-on experience can expand their approach and skillset to treatments.

Holistic medicine also calls for a strong sense of intuition and in many cases spirituality. Sometimes rather than choosing the practice, the practice chooses you. It may become an area of expertise, or serve as a stepping stone toward a larger practice. Trust which skills you excel at, as it is the universe's way of guiding you towards your purpose.

My own journey began at Halo Chiropractic in Los Angeles, CA, where I discovered sound baths were being offered as an additional service to patients. I observed Dr. Iris for months, and later began performing my own sessions at multiple yoga studios. There was something about sound that seemed to alleviate pain for my clients, but I had no data to support their claims.

Research is an essential part of bridging the gap between eastern and western medicine.

Now as a part of my work with CNU College of Medicine, I recently consulted acoustic physics researcher, Dr. John Stuart Reid regarding his findings between sound and pain. His study found that the vibration of the sound waves from the singing crystal bowls stimulated the vagus nerve, which is the longest cranial nerve in the body and controls our perception of pain in the brain. The vibrations themselves massaged the nerve, reducing inflammation. In addition, he also discovered the singing bowls increased red blood cell viability up to 17% when played at 40 Hz and 73 Hz.

I highly encourage prospective students to seek out to opportunities where they have access to resources and experts who can help them conduct their own scientific research. Research is an essential part of bridging the gap between eastern and western medicine. You can start as a research coordinator, where you will learn about the steps involved in publishing a study. You can also build strong relationships with research departments and eventually conduct your own study, which may uncover answers that support your practice, or reveal entirely new findings."

What Can You Expect From a Top 91³ÉÈË Bachelor’s in Holistic Medicine?

At the bachelor's level, students can choose among several types of alternative medicine degrees that emphasize natural treatment options. Although each program has its own slant, they all focus on enhancing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being through historic traditions combined with modern science. 91³ÉÈË bachelor's degrees in holistic medicine are ideal for aspiring practitioners, and they may also help working healthcare professionals expand their career options or learn new treatments that can be added to their current practice.

Common classes for holistic health degrees include Aromatherapy Science, Botany & Plant Identification, Homeopathy, Holistic Nutrition, and Anatomy and Physiology. Some programs are specifically designed to prepare students to go on to graduate studies in naturopathy, integrative medicine, or other specialties.

These programs generally take students four to five years to complete, with total credit hour requirements ranging from 120-124. Some programs require students to complete a capstone project or accumulate a certain number of hours of hands-on experience to graduate.

In terms of admission requirements, first-year students need to have a high school diploma or GED. Students who are continuing from an associate degree program will need to provide college transcripts from any postsecondary schools attended previously.

If you want to really dive into the details, check out our latest magazine article about whether a bachelor's in holistic medicine is worth it.

How Does an Associate Degree Compare With a Bachelor’s Degree in Holistic Medicine?

For entry-level positions within the field, future professionals can seek an online associate degree. Programs are available in specialties such as herbal medicine, aromatherapy, energy healing, and massage therapy. Coursework varies but may include the study of plants and botanicals as well as anatomy. Graduates may be required to obtain a state license before going into practice.

An associate program is usually made up of 60 credit hours, and students can finish in about two years. Program applicants may be asked to submit high school transcripts along with their application forms.

How Does a Master’s Differ From a Bachelor’s in Holistic Medicine?

In the field of holistic medicine, students can opt for one of several different master's degree programs. For example, a master's in integrative medicine trains healthcare professionals to incorporate many types of therapies in helping their patients achieve optimal health and wellness. Master's in holistic nutrition programs teach dietitians and nutritionists to use a holistic approach to eating by focusing on the mind-body-spirit connection. Master's programs in energetic and spiritual healing often draw upon ancient Ayurvedic and oriental medicine practices, such as acupuncture and acupressure, to restore a patient's well-being.

Holistic medicine master's programs usually require 30-36 credit hours and take students approximately two years to complete.

Applicants who are interested in earning a holistic medicine master's degree must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited program. They also need to submit college transcripts, and many programs ask applicants to provide professional letters of recommendation outlining their professional accomplishments and attributes.

When Would You Need a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine?

Aspiring naturopathic physicians need to earn a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine before entering into practice. Students enrolled in an online doctoral program will learn to combine natural resources with modern science to provide patients with holistic diagnosis and treatment.

The typical online naturopathic doctoral degree program takes participants five to seven years to complete. Key courses in doctoral-level online naturopathic medicine programs include Clinical Biochemistry, Functional Medicine, Botanicals and Nature Cure, Naturopathic Women's Health, Elemental Chemistry, and Aromatherapy. Students are also required to participate in a clinical externship and a dissertation.

To be admitted, students must hold a bachelor's or master's degree in holistic medicine or a similar field. Prerequisite courses usually include Biology and General Chemistry. Some programs may require previous work experience.

Holistic medical practitioners who want to expand their knowledge in a particular subject should consider earning a graduate certificate. Some options include Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Aromatherapy Science, Homeopathy, and Advanced Applied Holistic Nutrition.

Most certificate programs can be completed in about a year, and they typically consist of 15-20 credit hours. Applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution to qualify for a graduate certificate program.

Why Does Accreditation Matter When Comparing 91³ÉÈË Holistic Medicine Programs?

Before you enroll in an online holistic medicine degree program, be sure to check the school's accreditation status. Accreditation means that a school's academic programs, faculty members, and student services have been reviewed and proven to meet standards of excellence.

Importantly, all schools we feature across 91³ÉÈË are institutionally accredited.

Aside from being a potential requirement for state licensure, enrollment in an accredited school may also impact your ability to obtain financial aid, transfer credits among schools, and gain acceptance into a graduate program. Some employers require job candidates to hold an accredited degree or certificate. Searchable databases of accredited colleges are available on the and the websites.

In addition to an entire school earning institutional accreditation, individual programs can also be accredited, usually by professional organizations, to ensure the programs provide thorough training. Programmatic accreditation of holistic medicine online programs may be conducted by one of several different independent agencies, depending on the type of program.

For example, the (CNME) is the accrediting body for naturopathic medical programs, and the (ACAOM) reviews acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, integrative medicine, natural medicine, and other related programs.

What Else Should You Consider When Looking For An 91³ÉÈË Holistic Medicine Degree Program?

Perhaps the most important factor in selecting a holistic medicine program is whether it will help you launch the career you have in mind. There are relatively few accredited programs for naturopathic medicine, holistic health, and other types of natural medicine. Each program has unique features and specialized coursework, so thoroughly research the curriculum of each option before enrolling. Also, if you're thinking about an occupation that requires graduate school, be sure to choose a program that will prepare you for advanced study.

Similarly, you'll need to investigate any licensure requirements in your state. Depending on where you plan to work, you may need a state-issued license or credential to work as a healthcare professional. Among the prerequisites for licensure may be a specific type of degree or certificate from an accredited school.

In addition to these decisions, you'll need to determine if you want to pursue a holistic medicine degree online. 91³ÉÈË programs usually offer greater flexibility than traditional programs and may be more affordable. You can generally engage in coursework, class discussions, and assignments at your convenience as long as you meet the required deadlines. However, distance learning is not necessarily right for everyone. If you require more structure, you may prefer on-campus classes.

Once you've determined the best degree options for your goals, you'll need to apply to the college or colleges of your choice. Admissions requirements and application deadlines vary slightly among schools but are typically the same for on-campus and online learners.

You will probably be asked to submit your official high school or GED transcripts along with your online application. Depending on the college's admissions criteria, you may be required to document a GPA of at least 2.5 or possibly higher. Other documents that you may be asked to submit include:

  • College entrance exam scores
  • A personal essay or statement
  • Recommendation letters from teachers, coaches, supervisors, or other mentors
  • A list of extracurricular activities, including jobs, team sports, and volunteer activities

How Is Holistic Medicine Different From Homeopathic Medicine?

While holistic medicine and homeopathic medicine have some similarities, there are several distinct . Holistic medicine addresses the whole person, including mind, body, and spirit. It integrates conventional and alternative practices to treat disease and promote health. While homeopathic medicine also focuses on treating the whole person, it only utilizes natural remedies. Unlike holistic medicine, homeopathy doesn't use prescription drugs.

What Is the Difference Between Functional Medicine and Holistic Medicine?

Both holistic and functional medicine seek to improve health and wellness through nutritional therapy, exercise, and natural treatments rather than drugs or surgery, although they don't completely dismiss those options. Holistic medicine uses a variety of therapies — physical, emotional, and spiritual — to promote health and heal an individual as a whole. Functional medicine takes a highly personalized approach to treating underlying causes rather than symptoms. Doctors practicing functional medicine look at a patient's genetics, environment, and history.

What Careers Can an Integrative Holistic Medicine Degree Lead To?

Many people who earn degrees in integrative holistic medicine become healthcare practitioners, such as integrated physicians or naturopaths, working directly with patients. Some work as independent consultants running their own practice, while others work in collaborative healthcare facilities that may offer both traditional Western medicine and alternative medicine therapies. Graduates can also become health educators or healthcare policy advisors.

Do You Need a Degree to Practice Holistic Medicine?

Although you do not need a specific degree to practice some types of holistic medicine, you should acquire some training before going into practice. Most states require candidates to have completed a holistic medicine degree, diploma, or certificate program to obtain a license. Also, you'll have more credibility with your clients if you can assure them of your knowledge.

This school was fast paced. The instructors were positive and helpful. The instruction itself was way better than when I got my associates degree at another school. I was able to homeschool and run a business while attending school. I loved it. I recommend this institution.

Never thought I would be returning back to school after 30 years. Been holding on to an Everglade flyer for over a year, (LOL)! I looked at it over and over again. And as Eminem said, "You only got one shot, do not miss your chance to blow, opportunity comes once in a lifetime." Well, here I am. Ready to start my dream career. There are only a few that offer a degree in Alternative Medicine. And thanks to Everglade Admissions, they have been great with assisting me with everything that was needed... Read More

I've never done college online before and was very skeptical but the staff members are so accommodating and are always there when you need them! I grew up using Alternative Medicine since it's used in Asian cultures so I wanted to further my studies and it was worth it! Everglades University is a wonderful experience.

Everglades is one of the best decisions I have ever made. They constantly check in to ensure your success and the Dean is always attentive during our meetings. I am thankful for the opportunity to be here and am looking forward to finishing and obtaining my degree.

I enjoyed how quickly I was able to get enrolled and locate the funding necessary to start class. They were very informative and helpful and answered all my questions and address my concerns. I am very excited to begin my new journey of medicine with them in my overall process of becoming a future physcian.

I enjoyed working on my degree at Everglades University. I learned a lot in my classes, though I liked some more than others. The online classes allowed me to work while attending school. The block class schedule allowed me to focus on one course at a time instead of being overwhelmed by material from multiple courses all at once. The staff is accommodating and understanding. They are always available to answer questions and concerns from students. Overall, I had a great experience.

This school is amazing and I couldn't ask for more friendlier and helpful staff. A few years ago I went through a rough personal time and had to quit school but the faculty worked with me to get me back on track and to help me get reinstated in the program I first started. The professors are very helpful with helping you understand the material if you are struggling and the work and reading is very organized and carefully planned out. I like that the curriculum is paced out to give you time to finish... Read More

I decided to attend Everglades University as a way to further my education in Alternative Medicine so I can better serve the customers of Indica Dreams CBD. From start to, finish my time at Everglades has been amazing and I could not have asked for a more supportive staff. Everglades has truly become an extension of my family and I have truly enjoyed my time here.

Sadly, I did not have a good experience with EU. I've tried to complete the BS in Alternative Medicine degree twice now; and I always have to stop attending over financial discrepancy, lies and lack of accountability of the school. I can rarely get any answers from EU, much less a straight answer; and have been shuffled around only to feel frustrated and disappointed. The first time I attended I had to drop out of the program because the school wanted to keep ALL my financial aide and I needed it... Read More

I am a full time, online student at Everglades University. EU has provided an ease of access to my higher education. The faculty and staff are responsive and seem to be genuinely interested and concerned for student progress by making resources available and providing communication channels. Since I'm exclusively online, it can sometimes feel as though when I have a question, I'm not sure how or who to ask. However, the staff is so wonderful and helpful, reaching out to help with any questions or... Read More
