I have so many positive things to say about this educational institution, The Modern Languages Department, and my specific program: Teaching English as a Second Language. Cortland has provided me with not only the highest quality education, but enriching and meaningful experiences that have helped me get to where I am today. Although the TESOL department is on the smaller side, this ended up being a huge benefit. My major classes enabled me to make authentic connections with my peers and professors.... Read More Many of the same professors teach multiple classes in the program so it was nice to have them again. I genuinely felt respected, acknowledged, and challenged. The upside to smaller institutions is that you definitely don't feel like a "number" or "just another student" sitting in a lecture. I also want to highlight the Study Abroad Office who has done a great job promoting programs abroad. I was able to study abroad the spring semester of my Sophomore year in Mangalore, India and when I came back, I was able to intern with the Study Abroad Office and share my experiences. I'm very grateful to have gotten my education from here, for it has been one of the greatest decisions of my life. I was employed full time right after I graduated and I don't necessarily think that would have happened if I had gotten my education elsewhere. Cortland has prepared me immensely and I still keep in contact with my professors today. 4 years goes by so fast and I would do it all again (if I could).

I absolutely loved and appreciated my time at SUNY Cortland. The people and opportunities brought to me at Cortland were forever life-altering. My favorite and most influential part of my undergraduate experience were the people I met; friends, professors, mentors. They are super helpful and will go above and beyond to make your experience amazing. Additionally, I absolutely loved working as a student assistant on campus. I worked alongside these great professionals in the International Programs Office for three years. Although I was a sport management major, this job shaped my passions and aspirations and led me to change my career path. I am now studying higher education, thanks to my lovely coworkers and mentors at the IPO! Cortland is a great school that offers many opportunities at an affordable price. The memories will last a lifetime - you won't regret it!

I believe that the college I attended, SUNY Cortland, has prepared me to have a successful future in many ways. Most importantly, Cortland helped shape me as a person. It taught me how to live away from home, how to make new friends and how to balance work and social life. It provided me with an extreme amount of community service opportunities, work opportunities on and off campus, and educational opportunities. I was able to be an active participant in the community by partaking in activities such... Read More as the CROP Walk to help end hunger and poverty. I was able to become part of a sorority which taught me leadership skills, how to work well on a team with others, enabled me to raise money for womens cardiac care and taught me time management skills. I was able to look up to many amazing women who are now lifelong friends that have taught me so much about my future career. Thankfully, Cortland introduced me to speech language pathology. The professors in the professional studies school prepared me to excel as a graduate student and I am forever grateful for that. They provided an extreme amount of resources and opportunities to learn about speech pathology. The NSSLHA Speech and Hearing Club allowed us to gain experiences from guest lecturers and conferences and allowed us to bond with our fellow speech pathology peers through community service and social events such as the end of the year banquet. The Center for Speech, Language and Hearing Disorders on the SUNY Cortland campus provided undergraduates with excellent opportunities to observe speech therapy sessions in order to gain knowledge and experience. I am very thankful for my four years at SUNY Cortland as it provided me with an amazing education and lead me to the best friends I could have ever asked for.

I thought the Speech and Hearing Science program was fantastic and prepared me so well for graduate school. My classes gave me the necessary background, and then some, to succeed in my future career, The professors were well- qualified, really cared about the students, and went above and beyond to help their students. I would strongly recommend this program to others. In regards to the college in general, the administration cares more about their own image and making problems go away rather than... One of my friends was sexually assaulted, and instead of protecting her and preventing further trauma, they dismissed her situation and broke several rules. During the trial, the Code of Student conducted was clearly broken, in numerous ways; when this was brought up, administration said it did not matter and there was no issue instead of investigating this misconduct. Furthermore, the Student Conduct Office clearly favored the perpetrator and engaged in victim blaming and dismissal of a serious issue to make the "problem" go away. While my college experience was not bad and I made lasting friendships and connections, my experience was seriously hindered by the neglect and negativity of the administration. I would not recommend this college to women because clearly, this campus favors the image of student athletes rather than the safety of all students.

While SUNY Cortland's MA English program is small and intimate, the course offerings are slim and not entirely up to the most modern fields of studies, or lacking in some areas such as children's literature. The program can also seem a bit unorganized at times, particularly regarding student theses. That said most of the professors I've had are very nice and are quite accommodating to commuter students in regards to weather issues and transportation.
