The social work school is horrible. They can be extremely stuck up. Multiple times I have been belittled and treated poorly for asking questions about my field placement or for asking questions in regards to a grade that was inappropriately placed but eventually was fixed. I was put into a very inappropriate field placement and then blamed. My field instructor did not even have a social work degree and the college allowed her to count my hours wrong all while shaming ME for asking for help on the... Read More matter. It is evident the professor of my field course has narcissistic tendencies as well, and I have no idea how she is a social worker at all at this point with her lack of ethics and lack of empathy. She comes off extremely robotic. I wish I could get a refund due to such a horrible experience. It was borderline traumatic and I am emotionally drained already just from attending this college. I have nothing positive to say. I am disgusted at how students are treated and made to feel. There is a general lack of support and no empathy, all while being shamed and called "unprofessional" if you have any emotions at all due to THEIR errors. They also blame you if they mess anything up. I was even attacked over email for being confused by a faculty members spelling error at one point! GLAD TO BE DONE! DO NOT GO HERE!!

Do Not- I repeat- Do Not attend this school if you want a MA in Social Work. The faculty is full of hypocrites. They are all self important for no good reason. The material and teaching methods are outdated and stale. They think that they need to present themselves as infallible, and the student must bow down to their authority. Reality check: you are a professor at the University of Tennessee, not Harvard. Everyone in my graduating class felt this way, and said "you've just got to get through it."... If you are considering this program, do your due diligence speaking to friends of friends that may have attended this program and hear it straight from the horse's mouth. Need more evidence that the culture of this school is shaped by conservative values? It's Tennessee. The donors influence the deans, the deans influence the faculty. Where is the money coming from? Tennessee? The state that has the 6th highest support rate for Trump? Perhaps you could have a better experience in a different, more cut and dry field, but when it comes to social sciences, they are way behind on how millennials want to learn and how they want to be treated. Don't waste your money here. I'm just glad it's over.

The University of Tennessee Knoxville College of Social Work was not what I expected. Most of the faculty were great, but the available field placements/internships were lacking. Read More that there was a huge need for social workers and the majority of students were employed full time as an MSSW within 6 months. We are also told that we could expect starting salaries ranging from 40-50k. Neither of these things has been true. The job search has been brutal and those of us who have found jobs have been lucky to start at 30, with the majority making less. Many in my cohort are not even employed in the field because there simply are no jobs. If I had it to do over again, I would have taken a closer look at other schools before deciding to attend the University of Tennessee.
