When applying for colleges, I always knew I wanted to go to a mid-sized crunchy university in New England. While I never intended to attend UMaine, I applied due to the free application fee. I was accepted and after taking a tour, I realized how much I underestimated UMaine. From academics to social life to its beautiful campus and wide array of activities, any student can find their people at UMaine. I got to meet amazing people on and off campus and truly found activities that suited me. UMaine is an outdoorsman's school, meaning that beautiful nature sites and hikes can be found even 5-10 minutes off campus. UMaine has a very cool campus- not too big and not too small, with a gorgeous central square topped by the wonderful Fogler Library. UMaine also has an amazing gym, which I would highly recommend. Even the sports are fun (which is something I typically dont care about in a school). Great tight nit environment, but not too small like a high school. I could go on and on. It was really the right place for me. I even met my future wife at UMaine in a club. How lucky am I? Go Black Bears!

Waste of money. Its the cheapest school I got into, and it is surely cheap. The money doesnt go anywhere it seems; the dorms are hellish, bathrooms are disgusting, the dining halls are a pathetic, the food is genuinely concerning, the lecture halls are antique, the professors are apathetic and mostly incompetent, the advisors dont care about you (that is assuming they actually speak the same language as you), the book store is sad, etc. I am convinced that the only reason why people go here is because... Read More its affordable. They give you half as many spots as you need to park the student population, and will ticket you as often as they possibly can, they will tow you without telling you... The only thing I have to say about this place thats somewhat positive is that its only a few hours away from the closest mountain. Dont go to this cheap, out-dated school. There are plenty of better options.

My time at the University of Maine was the best four years of my life. I am so happy I made the choice I did. When I was trying to decide where to go to school, I was sure I wanted to leave the state. I wanted to get away, be a new person, and leave the old high school me behind. However, I ended up staying in state. Honestly, it was the best decision I could have made. The University of Maine has amazing programs and I got a wonderful education. More over, I saved money by having in-state tuition... Read More and not making life after college absolutely miserable. The programs, services, and extracurricular activities offered at the University of Maine are amazing. I was able to be part of the University Singers, the all girls a capella group Renaissance, Chi Omega sorority and participate in intramural sports. I made friends that will last me a life time. I got to experience the fun and excitement of Maine Day, and see amazing shows on campus. I wouldn't change a thing about my college experience!

I really enjoyed my time at UMaine. I majored in International Affairs with a concentration in Political Science and had the opportunity to take a variety of courses focused on national security and comparative politics. The professors were fantastic and because many of them had been in other career fields before becoming professors (state department, military, international banking, intelligence) they provided great insight and were very down to earth. One problem with the major at the time was... Read More the fact that there were some courses that were required that I believe should not have been (two mandatory Canadian Studies instead of letting students pick a country or a region). Economics was also not required, which ignored a major field of international affairs, so I pursued those courses on my own. I think the program has since changed to address these two issues, but I would recommend that future students look up the current required course list for the International Affairs major just to be sure. Overall, UMaine is a great place with great students, approachable and enthusiastic professors, and a large course offering. I definitely recommend attending for a quality and affordable education.

I am currently a senior at University of Maine. I will be graduating in May. I just got accepted into the Advanced Placement Masters Program on campus. I really enjoy this university and can't wait to continue my learning. I'd love to get this scholarship to help me pay to further my education with the professors at this school.
