My experience at the University of Minnesota definitely had its ups-and-downs. I initially started by studying computer science and realized that was not for me during my first semester of my sophomore year. I decided reverse course and apply to the Carlson, the university's business school. Although my previous grades were high and I preformed well in the prerequisite courses, I was rejected by first time applying and was accepted on my second attempt. The first rejection pushed my college timeline... Read More back a semester which cost an additional $10,000+ for this extra semester, which I nor my family were happy about. Once I started in the business school it the material was so simple and the classes were easy to pass. This was thanks to professors giving online exams that were not proctored, giving open-note exams, or allowing note sheets for tests. While many students would view this as a good gesture by professors, I viewed it as somewhat a waste of my money as I was not learning or retaining information to prepare for exams and instead relying on my notes or the internet (when it was allowed). These exam concessions by professors and the ease of material confused me as to why my first application was rejected if Carlson is really not as "prestigious" or "rigorous" as people make it seem. However, this does not mean that my experience in Carlson was bad. I made many friends and enjoyed many of my classes, but I would have liked Carlson's teaching practices and material to live up to the status they claim it to be.

I am pro education, but I have never cared for the structure of most school, because there is a lot of waste. For instance, the astrology class I took, which was really an astro physics course, was a science requirement that was a complete waste of my time and effort. I understand the idea of getting a well rounded education, but colleges are businesses that come with a very expensive price tag, that requirement could have been better spent in a myriad of other endeavors that could have added more... Read More value to my interests and earning potential. The economics and marketing courses I took added value, same with the writing courses. Accounting, I asked one question in four years, graduated with honors, and on that one question I was told to look it up in the book. My councilor was also someone I'd say that failed me, as I needed six more credits to graduate with a dual degree, where they did not inform me of this until my senior year, where I would have needed to take another semester to complete this. I'm not sure what their job actually was if not to inform people like me how to best set themselves up for relevant value. So ultimately, some good, some bad, a tremendous amount of debt.

I had a relatively good experience at the University of Minnesota. The quality of the classes and the types of things that you end up learning at the University of Minnesota is really Diverse. The demand more out the students than previous universities that I have attended, which adds to the rigor of the studies and the reputation of the school. What I enjoyed most was the variety of classes to choose from. Because of the size of the university there are literally hundreds of classes to choose from... Read More that I found classes I had genuine interest in. The only downside I faced was how expensive the education was compared to the quality of education. Some may say that expecting more from the students, while being strict about the rules may help the schools reputation, some of the other schools I attended at smaller Community Colleges put more effort into actually teaching the students instead of attempting to weed them out. this is the only reason I would not recommend this school to others. I feel that the right community college might be better at actually teaching and give more bang for the buck.

I am very satisfied with my educational experience at the University of Minnesota. After being accepted into the journalism program, I took classes that fueled my passion for the industry and also afforded me several professional experiences (like an internship with a local newspaper, experience creating a magazine and news site with other students, etc). My experience at the University of Minnesota has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. From the start, I noticed that the university places a strong emphasis on academic excellence while also encouraging personal growth and independence. Campus life at the University of Minnesota is vibrant and diverse. Students come from many backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, which creates an inclusive environment and enriches the overall learning experience. There are numerous student organizations, events, and activities that make it easy to get involved, meet people, and build a sense of community.
While the academic demands can sometimes feel intense, the support systems in place academic advisors, mental health resources, and peer networks help students navigate challenges effectively. Overall, the University of Minnesota provided me with a strong educational foundation, valuable life skills, and experiences that contributed significantly to my personal and professional development. I would recommend it to students who are motivated, curious, and ready to grow.

The university is extremely diverse and accepting of students of all backgrounds. It's easy to fit in and to find organization and student groups that welcome you. There are also many resources available when it comes to academic support and mental health support. Many faculty are also passionate in their fields and feel like friends at times. However, many STEM classes are unnecessarily difficult and seemingly made to weed out students who aren't pure geniuses at their fields. This university is... I graduated from UMN-Twin Cities in 2017 with a B.A in Global Studies. The connections I made with faculty and peers in my program have been amazing and longlasting. The Global Studies department has been foundational to my academic success. Even though the program has many students, you're still able to have a close mentor and mentee relationship with the advisors and professors. As you progress to junior and senior year the classes get smaller and the conversations surrounding your area of study... Read More get more critical. You leave the program with more insight about the world and your role in it. However, my program was unique and not reflective of the general atmosphere of the campus. Many students found a safe space and community in Global Studies.
