Strong program at an up-and-coming urban research institution (the fastest growing UNC school and conveniently located in a growing city). Wonderful professors and mentors in the department and at the university. I have been fortunate to receive sufficient financial and academic support. Maybe not quite the same expectations and competitiveness as you would encounter at an Ivy League school, but I'd rather be here given the amount of opportunities I have at UNC Charlotte to do independent and collaborative... Read More research, publish, present at conferences, and teach undergraduate courses. Affordable housing nearby, though you need a car to live here (the light rail is opening 2017 to connect campus to downtown Charlotte).

I am enjoying my time here and feel like I am getting a good education and receiving enough support, though you do need to take initiative to seek out and utilize the resources available to you and get involved (but I think that's the case almost everywhere). Depending on your department, it may or may not be easy to make friends and find accessible faculty members. My classes are pretty diverse in terms of age, academic backgrounds, race/ethnicity, and nationality, much more so than the undergraduate... Read More courses I think. I don't eat on campus often and I have never experienced campus housing so I can't really judge that. Charlotte is great but expect to buy a car if you want to explore the city.
