Hollins University is a special place nestled in the mountains of Roanoke educating young women. Classes are small and relationships with your professors are strong because of this. This school was a good fit for me for many reasons. First, they accepted transfer credits from Ivy Tech, where I earned an Associate's Degree. However, the downside was that they only accept a limited number of transfer credits, so keep that in mind if you are looking to transfer. Now, many two-year colleges have specific transfer programs. Second, the Liberal Arts professors were top-rate. It did not matter what class I took, the majority of my professors not only knew the material but had a passion... Read More for it that really showed and encourage the students to be engaged. Third, the Philosophy program could be better if they incorporated more logic courses (which they recently cut back even more), however, the professors were incredible and always had the time and willingness to meet with students. They have at least two very well known scholars associated with the Philosophy department. My second issue with the program was a lack of historical context. In the four years that I attended (two for my Masters), I did not see any class offered on the classics like Plato or Aristotle. Much of the classes were based on modern Western analytical philosophy.

Overall, my experience at Murray State University was a positive one. I enjoyed my program in particular (Philosophy major), and my modes of thinking and preconceived notions were constantly challenged by the professors. Indeed, obtaining my degree from this program was an experience of tremendous growth, both as a student and a person in general. Unfortunately, MSU chose to dissolve the Philosophy program after the conclusion of the 2016 year, piecing the classes out to be parts of various other... Read More liberal arts curriculum. This means that, as of now, I will be one of the last students to graduate from this program at MSU, and the last student to receive the "Outstanding Senior in Philosophy" award. I believe this to be to the great impoverishment of the MSU community, as Philosophy is a field which helps to logic and critical thinking skills. It is an incredibly versatile degree/program which can provide the proper skill-set and paradigm for a number of rewarding career paths. In particular, I was honored to work closely with my advisor, Dr. R.G., and the equally wonderful Dr. C.G.. Both were exquisite and erudite teachers who served as constant sources of inspiration, encouragement, and knowledge for me. As a whole, the campus at MSU was an intriguing amalgam of diversity and uniformity. The diversity was provided by way of a thriving program of international students, who added a much needed element of ethnic and cultural diversity to the mix. The city of Murray itself was a relatively liberal place for it's location in the bible belt. I did notice, however, an alternative strand of conservatism present among some students/departments which ran counter to this general trend. The current president, Dr. Bob Davies, is a very kind and approachable man who is popular among the students. He can often be found out among the students, exploring the campus and taking an active role in the life of the university. My experience with Sparks Hall, the office where financial matters were dealt with, was less than positive. I would try to avoid interaction with the staff of that building whenever possible, because they had a reputation for generally being petulant and rude. My personal experiences confirmed this (on most occasions). If you are considering attending MSU, I would say to go ahead. I did truly enjoy the community and campus life overall. I worked as a desk clerk in my residential college (Clark) where I lived for all four years of my undergraduate collegiate experience. I would encourage students to be active in the life of the campus, branch out, and truly grow. I hope you found this review to be helpful in making your decision!

It's a great school for students passionate about the liberal arts and looking to take advantage of flexible, yet rigorous curriculum. Small class size and small professor-to-student ratio mean that students will be able to develop meaningful mentoring relationships with the professors. While the student body lacks diversity, the various departments and centers on campus strive to integrate students into every part of the community. Duke's interdisciplinary institutes (Nicholas School for the Environment, Kenan Institute for Ethics, etc.) make it stand out from similar institutions. These institutes and the associated programs (i.e. FOCUS) help provide a quintessential liberal arts experience - one that's based in asking questions, exploration, and critical thinking/writing. As I'm sure is the case with most schools, the humanities often feel like they're playing second fiddle to the science and engineering programs. But the... Read More school has not compromised on top-notch faculty who are always advocating for their programs. Particularly in the humanities, class sizes are small, and there is a very high likelihood that courses will be taught be professors. None of my humanities courses were ever taught by TAs. Duke also does a wonderful job of fostering community in its students from programs like FOCUS for first years, to the crazy fun basketball scene, which is fun even for un-sporty people. And Durham should be a dark horse in the running for best college town in America - more "indie" than most gentrified college towns, it will reward those students willing to explore off the beaten path, away from that one street full of fast-casual food that grazes their campus.

Florida State is a great place to be at school. I'm not a fan of the school's administration, and I think there are issues that need to be addressed at FSU. The school is not as diverse as I'd have liked, but that's true for many institutions. The University has accepted problematic gifts from donors that I feel have compromised the school's integrity, and the process by which the current President was chosen was very problematic. That being said, the people that I met (fellow students, faculty, and people in the area) and opportunities that I had at FSU have greatly impacted my life. The school is located in a great city (Tallahassee, Florida) that has space for a wide range of interests. There is a great art scene (theatre, comedy, a good music scene, anything you can hope for), an opportunity to involve yourself in state politics, and people, especially faculty and staff at FSU, who cal help you find whatever else you may need. It isn't perfect, but FSU is a really great place to go to school.

Western Washington University was a perfect school for me, because I was looking for high-quality humanities courses for an affordable price. I found incredible professors and curriculum in the philosophy department. I was much less impressed with some of my courses in the hard sciences, like chemistry and physics. Professors in these courses seem ready to innovate the technology with which they teach but not their methods, to the deficit of some students. My biology courses were a delight, however.... Read More It also helped that my university is located in one of the most beautiful spots in the nation -- Bellingham, Washington. In Bellingham, it is completely within reason to study with a cup of coffee at a small historic cafe with views of both mountains and ocean. It's truly a place like no other.
