How We Rank "Most Affordable" Schools

%%YEAR%% Most Affordable 91³ÉÈË %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The 91³ÉÈË research team manually collects and verifies tuition data for every school on our lists, ensuring you see accurate, up-to-date costs whether you're pursuing an associate, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program. To qualify, schools must offer fully online degrees, hold institutional accreditation, and have verifiable enrollment data through the National Center for Education Statistics. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize schools that offer a consistent tuition rate across programs at the same degree level, so you're not caught off guard by unexpected price differences between majors, and for graduate programs we go a step further by individually calculating program costs since credit requirements and fees vary widely.

Many reviewers credit caring faculty, high standards, practical instruction, and strong mentorship for exam success, quick job placement, internships, and lasting confidence. Why we like them: UofM offers pipelines to marquee internships at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, FedEx, and Archer Malmo, which are all high-impact healthcare, logistics, and agency environments. Student Review Summary: Reviews for the University of Memphis are broadly positive, driven by strong professor support, flexible scheduling, and practical opportunities that helped many reviewers secure internships, build networks, and feel career-ready. Several described caring faculty, approachable advisers, diverse campus life, and a safe, attractive campus with useful resources such as libraries, shuttles, and online options. The sharpest criticism centers on inconsistent administration: poor communication, weak advising, unanswered emails, financial aid confusion, and degree planning mistakes. Cost is a recurring complaint, alongside dated labs, limited course variety, parking, crime around campus, and uneven career services that left some graduates underprepared for employment.

Why we like them: At UMGC, we really like that you gain lifelong access to career services after graduation, which we value as an ongoing return on investment. As part of the communication degree, you complete distinctive, practice-rich projects — an AP-style news story from a public meeting across print, broadcast, and multimedia; a 3,500–5,000-word persuasive business proposal that solves a real organizational problem; a professional media kit; and a 30-second video elevator pitch.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray a highly polarized experience shaped by self-discipline, workload tolerance, and interactions with administration. Supporters praise the flexible online format, accelerated terms, transfer-friendly policies, and coursework that fits full-time work, military schedules, and family responsibilities. Many say success depends on reading carefully, writing often, participating consistently, and seeking help early. Critics focus on chronic administrative problems, especially financial aid, billing, advising, transcript processing, and confusing communication. Academically, feedback on teaching is uneven: some instructors are engaged experts, while others feel absent, slow to respond, or overly reliant on self-teaching. Group projects, heavy discussion requirements, and extensive paper-writing are recurring frustrations.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Waldorf University are overwhelmingly positive, with users repeatedly praising responsive professors, attentive advisers, and staff who simplify admissions, registration, and financial aid. Many highlight affordability, especially tuition that often includes textbooks, plus strong transfer-credit acceptance and flexible eight-week terms that fit full-time work. Coursework is described as organized, practical, and appropriately challenging, though several note it requires 20 to 25 hours weekly, solid writing skills, and strong self-discipline because interaction can be limited. Less favorable feedback mentions inconsistent professor responsiveness, minimal career guidance, and one severe complaint alleging unsafe campus culture and poor institutional accountability.

Supporters frequently praise the flexible format, clear weekly structure, responsive advisors, smooth credit transfers, reasonable pricing, and coursework that fits demanding work and family schedules. Many say success depends heavily on self-discipline, independent learning, and writing ability, with some describing the classes as challenging and career-helpful. Why we like them: We view PG’s three-week, no-cost trial as a risk-free entry point that lets you test the platform, pacing, and support before you commit. This lets you validate fit without the financial pressure. You also get a first-course planning session with faculty to co-create a degree roadmap and a Time and Cost Calculator to quantify how prior learning can shorten your path. Student Review Summary: Reviews of Purdue Global are sharply divided, but negative feedback dominates and centers on administrative breakdowns rather than coursework. Many students describe financial aid, military benefits, refunds, and transcript processing as inconsistent, slow, or error-prone, with different representatives giving conflicting answers and some saying surprise balances or funding gaps appeared late in their studies. Several also felt misled about transfer credits, tuition, and the distinction between Purdue Global and Purdue University. Positive reviews consistently praise flexible online scheduling, supportive advisors and professors, responsive tutoring, and challenging writing-heavy coursework that fit working adults, especially those balancing jobs, family, or military service.

Why we like them: Liberty's PR concentration is housed in the School of Business, so you approach sport communication and PR through a business lens that many programs lack. We believe this could strengthen your market readiness. Prior internship placements with Adidas (Germany HQ), the Washington Commanders, and D.C. United show access to global and major-league contexts uncommon in online pathways.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Liberty University are sharply divided, though the overall pattern leans positive because many reviewers gave high ratings and praised flexibility, affordability, and strong support for military families. Supporters said the online format fit demanding work and family schedules, eight-week terms helped them finish faster, and many professors were responsive, rigorous, and encouraging. They also valued the explicitly Christian framework when it aligned with their expectations. Critics focused on inconsistent advising, frustrating financial aid and billing issues, weak instructor involvement in some courses, and a self-teaching model. A recurring complaint was heavy biblical integration in nearly every assignment, sometimes overshadowing subject-specific learning.

Why we like them: What makes WSU’s strategic communication B.A. great for PR-focused students is its fully integrated PR, advertising, and media strategy curriculum housed within the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication — a nationally recognized name in the field. Unlike broader communication degrees, this bachelor's program emphasizes data-driven persuasion, PR campaigns, media strategy, and consumer insights, culminating in a required professional internship.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Washington State University are broadly favorable, driven by strong school spirit, a close-knit college-town atmosphere, and faculty who are often described as accessible, supportive, and invested in success. Many reviewers valued small classes, research or internship opportunities, flexible online pathways, and the ease of building friendships, networks, and leadership experience. Several said the experience helped them mature personally as much as academically. Criticism centers on uneven teaching quality, weak or inconsistent advising, limited career support in some areas, high costs and debt, administrative and financial aid frustrations, and repeated complaints that some online offerings felt poorly designed, rigid, or lacking instructor engagement.

Expert Q&A: What Today’s 91³ÉÈË PR Bachelor's Students Really Need to Succeed

Headshot of Tim Gibbon

Tim Gibbon

Public Relations & Communications Director

Tim Gibbon is the Founder and Director of Elemental Communications. He specializes in public relations, content strategy, and integrated communications. With more than two decades of experience across journalism, PR, marketing, and social media, he has led campaigns for global brands including Adidas, Google, Disney, Intel, and Unilever.

"I started practicing online PR in the late 1990s. You’ll hear other practitioners with a lot of skin in the game refer to it as the wild west, and there is some truth in that.

I never saw online PR as a solo practice firmly fixed in the public relations (PR) arena. An integrated marketing approach is essential to understand and manage successful online PR activity and campaigns.

91³ÉÈË PR undergraduates need to appreciate that PR of old, where the focus in certain areas e.g. analyst relations, crisis management; online PR is mix of areas across content, design, influencer marketing, marketing, social media and PR, of course."

What should students look for when choosing an online PR program that will prepare them for today’s communication careers?
"Students need to look for lecturers on an online PR program who have real-life experience and, more importantly, if possible, who are still practicing... Additionally, students need a mix of practical and theoretical content they can engage with. It’s one thing to have great lectures, but students need to put them into practice.

When learning, failure can be more important than experiencing success. Particularly in communications, media relations and online PR, there will be instances when things do not go to plan in working life. If students experience this and know how to work a problem, it can help them in their careers.

Ideally, online PR programs need to be agile to move with the communities, platforms, technology and how audiences react to them."

How can online students gain practical PR experience while completing their degree remotely?
"Students should consider doing the following:

Create a CV. Even if students think they do not have relevant experience yet, they need to start somewhere.

Create an online portfolio and start to add any coursework to demonstrate the type of work they can deliver. This can be established platforms like Behance, LinkedIn, relevant associations and any communities.

Build an online presence. The irony is that just one element of online PR may include personal online branding. Students need to demonstrate as early as possible that can do this and their own profile.

Research the type of organizations they wish to work for and which industries.

Pitch to potential firms. From the research, enquire whether any manage internship and work experience programs for undergraduates

Widen the net. Use your personal (family and friends) and online network to enquire whether any internships or work experience positions are available."

What types of entry-level roles are common for PR graduates at the bachelor's level?

"PR executive is the most common entry-level role. Over the years you’re likely to see more digital, online and social media executive roles. If the hiring managers and HR are sensible, they’ll hire for these types of roles, not a role that spills into everything and a list of skills that one person can’t manage. Too frequently we’re seeing job descriptions that read like a work that would be for a department or team, not an individual.

Internships are far too frequently misunderstood, and the privilege is abused. Professionals can be assigned mundane and uninteresting tasks where they do not receive the benefit of working in a team and undertaking work that is truly reflective of working life.

When I selected interns many years ago, which would be effectively a PR executive role, I was looking for an individual who would embrace flexibility. More importantly, I needed an individual who was open to being exposed and included in the pitches and production work as much as what could be seen as the administration side of the role, something everyone in the team had to do.

Working with interns is time-consuming, and so it should be. It takes effort, energy and enthusiasm to provide a range of inclusive tasks for them in order to receive a rich experience of what it is like to work in a communications and marketing role. They represent your firm as well. From copywriting (media alerts, press releases, social media posts), presentation preparation for pitches (including their own concepts), research, strategy and meeting with clients, they did it all."

EXPERT TIP

"Networking is everything. Especially in this line of work. Students need to be present across relevant platforms, LinkedIn in particular. Student serious about a career in communications, content, marketing, PR etc., need to create a presence start establishing relationships."

FAQs About Affordable 91³ÉÈË Public Relations Bachelor’s Degrees

How Does 91³ÉÈË Rank the Most Affordable 91³ÉÈË Public Relations Bachelor’s Degrees?

To be considered for the list of affordable online PR degrees above, a school must offer at least one online public relations or closely related communication bachelor’s degree that mentions PR as a career outcome.

And, as with all pages across our site, institutions must be properly accredited and report online enrollment data to NCES/IPEDS, which are maintained by the U.S. Department of Education. Programs delivered primarily online are eligible, even if they include some in-person elements such as internships, practicums, or short on-campus experiences.

91³ÉÈË assesses affordability using standardized criteria designed to support fair, side-by-side comparisons. Only schools that apply a global tuition rate are included, meaning public relations students pay the same tuition as other bachelor’s students.

Once eligibility and tuition structure requirements are met, schools are then ranked by in-state annual tuition. All tuition figures are manually collected and verified from the official university sites. We also include citations for the sake of transparency and accuracy.

Partner institutions are evaluated using the same methodology as all other schools. Advertising relationships have no influence on rankings, and sponsored content is clearly distinguished from editorial analysis.

What Makes These 91³ÉÈË Public Relations Degrees Stand Out for Value?

Affordability (determined by tuition rates) are analyzed first and foremost, but the 91³ÉÈË research team also includes data that demonstrates strong outcomes at these schools. For example, the #1 PR degree for affordability at the University of Florida leads the list with just $3,357 in tuition, but it also boasts a 97% retention rate, 92% graduation rate, and $72,397 median earnings among PR grads.

All of this shows a very strong ROI at a low price point, and this is just the first option on the list. Other schools reinforce value through other data metrics. For example, FIU and UMGC enroll ~11,000 and ~44,800 online students, respectively, supporting remote learners with predictable courses and student services designed for distance learners, all while keeping tuition under $10,000 annually. (Plus, FIU’s 92% retention and 74% graduation rate indicate strong institutional support at scale, which is impressive for such a large online school.)

Which 91³ÉÈË PR Degrees Offer the Best Career and Earnings Potential?

While reported earnings offer a helpful benchmark, career alignment across these programs often explains why outcomes, like salary, differ.

UF’s strong median earnings ($72,397) among its PR bachelor's graduates reflect a curriculum that prepares students for corporate PR, public affairs, crisis communication, and strategic management roles, reinforced by nationally competitive experiences like PRSSA Bateman Case Study participation and an accelerated bachelor’s-to-master’s pathway. Those features are really solid benefits, so it makes sense that it leads to higher-paying roles where graduates can move more quickly, perhaps, into account management or communications leadership tracks.

Other programs broaden career access in unique ways. FIU’s integrated approach — combining PR with advertising, digital communication, and applied research — supports roles in brand strategy, media planning, digital campaign management, and multicultural marketing, particularly in large, urban markets where communications roles overlap.

SUNY Oswego and SNHU, with reported earnings nearer to $56,000-$59,000, tend to funnel graduates into entry- to mid-level PR specialist, communications coordinator, content strategist, and media relations roles, often emphasizing writing-intensive and client-facing skills.

Importantly, salary outcomes may vary by industry and region, but programs that advertise real-world projects, internships, or capstones tend to e the ones that consistently position graduates for faster entry into professional communication roles that can lead to higher salaries as responsibilities expand.

I love my college. Not only is there so much opportunity to learn. It is an awesome school that helps all students stay involved. The campus is huge but doesn't feel it. Everyone does a good job of coming together as a student body. The location in Orlando Florida which is great. It not only is a college town but you have all the theme parks, downtown Orlando and Winter Park. Which are three totally different areas to explore. I wouldn't change the school I picked. This school opened doors for me that I did not think was possible. With the liberal arts education, I was able to gain skills in all areas instead of focusing on one area which allowed me to stand out among others. The small class, teacher ratio was very beneficial to my learning.

Hofstra University is an amazing school with amazing opportunities. Upon finishing my sophomore year, I already had internship experience and many professionals within my personal network. Professors are always willing to make time for students, even outside of class. The campus is filled with beautiful plant-life. In addition, Hofstra is really close to NYC, which is perfect for students looking for internship and job experience!

This school is just amazing. The faculty care-beyond the classroom. They are there every step of the way for you and are never too busy to talk to you. The campus is beautiful. Attending Florida A&M University was one of the best decisions I have ever made. If you value learning about your heritage and culture, FAMU is the right place for you. I also enjoyed the fact that compared to other institutions and universities the classes were smaller in size which granted a closer relationship with professors. I am satisfied with the faculty and staff. Whenever I had a problem or concern I was always answered promptly. I am also satisfied with the quality of my degree.

The University of South Carolina offers you an education in a picturesque surrounding. I found that the school was lacking in support for new graduates and would recommend some sort of upgrade to their job placement/networking structure. Having alumni help students find jobs in the field is something that should be more of priority.

This school is an amazing place but you have to get involved. The courses aren't especially difficult, however if you just go to class and back to your room you will not get the most of the experience. San Jose State will not reach out to you, so you will have to reach out to it and only that way will you have the network needed to excel in the silicon valley. Join clubs, greek life and work on campus; if you don't you'll end your college career with just a piece of paper.

Gonzaga: this was a wonderful school and the people there are the absolute best. The faculty is extremely supportive and I have made lifelong friends through my time at Gonzaga and I would not have changed it for any other college experience. Public Relations: you get a very standard public relations education and you learn the ins and outs of the industry. One thing I would like to have happened would be if the job placement was a little more hands on and extensive.

The College of Journalism at the University of Florida was a fantastic place to successfully complete an undergraduate degree. Although the University itself is quite large, the college and faculty truly make you feel cared for. I would definitely recommend it to any student interested in a career in media, communications and public relations.

The school is way too obsessed with Greek life and if you're not in a Greek house, your social life is, without a doubt SCREWED. It's very very segregated. Personally I don't think the degree was worth the price. Campus is nice and there are good professors but still, too overpriced. The food is horrible. There is a fake fa̤cade that students are supportive of the basketball team - this is not the case. I'm thankful for the opportunity to have been able to go to school in Indianapolis, but I wish...
